Vocabulary for This Unit
The human heart has four chambers. The side on YOUR left (the right side of the image) sends blood without oxygen to the lungs to get some. The side on YOUR right (the left side of the image) sends this oxygenated blood to the rest of your body. It's not as tricky as it seems - I'll help you learn this easily in class.
Arteries take blood Away from the heart. Veins bring it back. In between the capillaries make all the blood vessels line up in nice neat lines to drop off the oxygen to our muscles, our tissues, and our brains. We'll learn the anatomy of these important blood vessels in class.
The official sounds of the heart: Lub dub, lub dub. These important sounds indicate that your heart is pumping - changes in these sounds (including changes in rate or swishing noises) can indicate serious problems
Carrying oxygen is the most important job our blood cells can do. The arteries have to be clear in order to let the blood cells pass through. Plaque buildup can lead to heart disease and stroke.
Measurements of blood pressure can give vital information on how your body is functioning. High blood pressure can be indicative of serious medical conditions and can require medication and even hospitalization.
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death. Well discuss the causes, symptoms, and treatment of heart disease.
